In memory of Max Santner

“My commitment to development cooperation started in the mid-90s as a personal and logical consequence of several years of travelling and working in countries in Asia and Africa“, Max Santner wrote not too long ago.

“My professional assignments over the past years have nothing but intensified my motivation to work towards the goal of global justice.“ – Max Santner

As a Red Cross Delegate Max Santner led reconstruction programmes for the organisation Kurier Aid Austria after the tsunami in Sri Lanka. From 2007 to 2015, he headed the department for International Cooperation at the Austrian Red Cross. After that, he returned to “the field“, as those involved in humanitarian aid would call it.

Following the devastating earthquake in Nepal in 2015, he spearheaded the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies’ delegation in Kathmandu. Few Austrians know Nepal as thoroughly as Max Santner did: The Upper Austrian had already worked in the country’s mountains in the 90s, organising trekking tours and working in the fields of poverty reduction and sustainable tourism. Before that, he taught geography and sports to schoolchildren in Linz.

His final career stop led him to the South Caucasus, where he led the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies‘ office in Tbilisi.

Max Santner pursued his above-cited goal of advocacy for global justice with exactly the right mixture of idealism and pragmatism. Down to earth and upfront where things needed direct tackling, provocative when it came to stimulating discussions on development cooperation and humanitarian aid and last but not least patient, sensitive and serene in all aspects of intercultural communication.

The passionate mountaineer and cyclist died last Saturday whilst on a short vacation in Upper Austria, leaving behind his wife and two adult daughters. He would have turned 64 on August 20.

Max will be missed terribly as a colleague, dialogue partner, advisor and friend.

Below this post, you can express your condolences in remembrance of Max Santner.

  9. Max was a true RCRC Movement person. Respectful, polite and wise. We have lost a great colleague. My sincere condolences to the family. Max will certainly be missed by us all.

  10. Knowing Max for many years on different occasions, I had the privilege to work with him in Nepal recently after the devastating 2015 earthquake through the ups and down of the earthquake recovery programme of Red Cross Red Crescent Movement. You’ve been a great man, taking all the challenges this job as IFRC Head of Country Office takes it with it. I remember sooo many conversations we had during that time. He has been a real Red Crosser, a type of person we felt we are missing more and more in our Movement, dedicated to assist people affected by disaster and cris in a true way without all the social media glamour. He left us, doing what he loved most, sports and nature with his family!
But I even more remember looking with you for bars in Thamel in Kathmandu in the middle of the night where the matches of the European football championship were showed, having some nice time and beer we both love together before going home when nearly the morning broke, and be at the office some hours later to take the challenges of the day. Last time I saw you, you were cycling together with your wife Astrid from Amsterdam back home, at we had some Weissbier at the Rhine river in Bonn. You had a lot of plans and were enjoying your mission in Georgia, when we last time talked only some weeks ago.

  11. My deepest sympathy and sincere condolences go to Max’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult moment when we try to deal with the shocking news of max moving to greener fields so suddenly. Only recently in May this year we were together in Almaty, facilitating and supporting together the 10th European Regional Conference and Max was one of those who very professionally led the preparations and facilitation of the Subtheme 2, Topic 2: : National Society networks within the Movement in Europe and Central Asia. Max’s kind approach, friendly smile, sparking eyes and a true heart for humanity will always be remembered. You will be always remembered, you will be always missed. It is difficult to believe that you left us so suddenly, so soon but that decision is in higher hands and our duty is only to accept it – may your soul Rest in Eternal Peace.

  12. Lieber Max!
    Ruhe in Frieden.

  14. It is unbearable to think and accept this tragic loss. There are no words to describe the feeling of sadness and loss. You brought a unique combination of warm-heartedness and expert knowledge to our international cooperation. You would always find the right words in any situation – be it on a professional or personal level. Following in your footsteps will be a great challenge, one we will face with sadness, while finding strength and courage in your memory.

To your family, we express our deepest condolences.

Ameli

  19. This is one of the sadest news ever. I know Max well from his missions in Nepal and Caucasus. We often contacted each other to exchange thoughts and experiences. He was always very generous and very easy to talk with about anything. He was a pure humanitarian and down to earth. He always put people less priviledged and fortunate top on his priority list. Max knew how to show people respect and dignity in his own way. I will miss all our discussions sometimes late nights. I will miss his voice and all our moments when we have laughed together to get new inspiration, energy and motivation. I will miss his smile. I will miss his calm approach. I will always remember Max with bright memories. He was such a great humanitarian in all regards. Thanks for everything! Heaven has become richer with a new angel with a big heart. My deepest and warmest condolences to his beloved family.

  20. It’s a really really sad day! A wonderful person left way too soon. My condolences and thoughts with the family and friends. He taught me how much staying calm is important in missions and it helped this young delegate back in Nepal.
    Rest in peace dear Max!

  21. Dear Astrid (if I may though we never met) –
I remember the first time I met Max back in Sri Lanka after the Tsunami. We had discussions of all sorts about our work and our challenges and later we became colleagues within the Red Cross Red Cross Movement. The good discussions remained, still spiced up with a good portion of humour and charm. The last time we met was in Bains de Paquis here in Geneva watching the lake and having beer together with some other friends. And now, I learn Max is no more – I cannot believe this sad news and that those discussions, his humour, charm and optimism should have an end forever. I am shocked, sad and bewildered how an end can be so sudden, so unexpected. I wish you, your daughters and all your family to find the strengths and energy through this path of sorrow and that you all will find a way to keep Max in your heart, so that his end will never be. I will for sure remember all those precious moments when our paths crossed. Danke Max und viel Kraft und Stärke Dir Astrid und Euren Kindern.

  22. Max.
Some two weeks ago we talked about meeting in Tbilisi soon. You mentioned you were looking forward to a relaxed time after your current assignment.
You lived a life full of activities, in different regions, in a in range of domains. And you truly did it your way – straight, inspiring, with a great sense of humour, open for other opinions, and ready to take tough decisions!
Thanks for all the long discussions, your support, your trust, and most of all your friendship!
My thoughts are with your beloved ones!

  23. I was so terribly saddened to hear of Max’s passing. He was a terrific, generous and committed colleague. He provided me such a warm welcome to the ICG when I first joined Red Cross. He was so motivated and passionate about making a difference and I feel that we all benefitted greatly from his extensive experience and learning from his pursuit of social justice.

There are so many who will miss Max, but we should also celebrate the significant contribution he has made to the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement.

My thoughts are with his family at this very difficult time.

    Rest in Peace, Max.

  24. The world has been made a better place because of Max. May his soul rest in perfect peace.

  27. Dear Max, how can I believe this terrible news, that you have suddenly left us for eternal journey! Last Monday (30 July) we spent half a day in our Movement Working Group meeting, had dinner together and on Tuesday (31 July) we had our Movement Platform Meeting followed by a lunch in a museum restaurant in Baku which amazed you very much. We planned a number of important activities that needs our joint efforts, how can we do it without you, Max!
Make no mistake Max, you will be remembered by us, your colleagues, forever. You will remain as a source of inspiration for all your colleagues. May God bless you, rest in peace my friend.
My sincere condolence to Max’s family and friends.

  28. Always a pleasure to work and dialogue with Max. Often we discussed future ways of working, the new paths we had to embark on adapting along the way. I loved his sincerity, his openess; always fun too and inviting me an others to visit him where-ever he was. As my counterpart as Head of International I already missed him, his analysis, sense of direction and constructive approach. The loss is great. Memories remain great too.

  29. Rest in peace, Max. We hope you will be in a better world and thank you for everything you did for humanity in this world. Blessings to your family.

  30. Max was a tremendous colleague, friend, advisor, interesting person with wide view and understanding of the issue, situation. You could learn a lot from him, his knowledge and experience. In the short period of working together there was a very good opportunity to share thoughts, ideas, many important steps were taken for the benefit of my National Society and me personally. He played a very important role in creating atmosphere of solidarity, good working relations and collaboration not in each of South Caucasus NSs, but in the region in whole. It was huge step forward, which we should follow on and keep going, so his efforts will have effect. As long as we have in our Movement people like Max Santner, really professional, devoted to what they are doing and believe, this Movement will be growing up and develop.
My deep condolences and sympathy goes to Max’s family! May God rest him in piece!

  31. I still can not believe that he is not alive, just two weeks ago we were in the trip.
My thoughts are with his family.

  32. Max made a lot for the Movement but his idea for Austrian Red Cross about development activities and cooperation with National Societies on Balkans, as neighbors and historical partners, was really important.
He always expressed interest and was ready to contribute for events in Balkans, last time we met in Almaty and it was the same.
    Rest in peace dear Max.

  33. Very, very sad news! I knew Max from Asia-Pacific and later met him in my home-city, Tbilisi where he was based as Head of IFRC Country Cluster. It was a pleasure to discuss and have conversations with him about Red Cross globally, where we are, how to improve our services and about Georgian culture, people, future and youth. Very kind personality. My sincere condolences to his family. RIP Max.

  34. On behalf of the Council and the staff of the Cyprus Red Cross Society, I would like to express our deepest condolences for the sudden loss of Max. I had the pleasure of personally meeting him and I was very impressed by his life experiences in various missions and work.

  43. The tragic news caused us an unspeakable grief.
I regret, that the person, who didn’t waste effort on bringing all the humanitarian organizations together in a field of cooperation, died so soon. We had a lot of plans and expected achievements with him, and now the great proof of our respect towards his remembrance will be the continuation of his work by us.
With deep sorrow, we share the pain of his relatives and solace them with kind and unlimited respect, which left Max Santner after him.

  51. This comes indeed as completely unexpected and shocking news. We mourn Max for his deep commitment to humanitarian assistance & development cooperation in general and for his dedicated service to ÖFSE – Austrian Foundation for Development Research, as a member of our supervisory board from 2013 – 2015 in particular.
Our sincere condolences to his wife and family.

Gerade jetzt wirst Du fehlen!

  55. I meet Max in a field visit to Nepal when I was working with the Canadian Red Cross. I found him very inspiring with all his knowledge of Nepal, smart, pragmatic, but also extremely kind and human. Thanks Max for sharing your knowledge of Nepal with me. You will be surely missed by your family and loved ones.

  56. To all those who loved, liked and appreciated Max,

As you know, he was a great person. I met max in meetings around the world but later came to know him better. Max led me and a few other friends and IFRC colleagues off-piste for a day of intense skiing. Max’s relaxed attitude, patience in skiers not half-as-good as he was, and his joy made us feel almost-safe. And he engineered a great day. That of course led to a great night. And then a return visit the next year… Max was like that. He made me want to come back and spend more time.

He was always such a pleasure to see and to spend a few minutes with. I will miss him greatly.

I want to wish all of his friends and family strength, love and vivid memories of Max. I am so sorry for your – and our – loss.

    My very best,
    Rob

  57. Irreparable loss. Deeply saddened to listen. I remember my time with Max here in Nepal both in urban and rural areas. Max- you were helpful, optimistic and enthusiastic humanitarian worker. RIP.
My deepest condolences to sad family members.
Nepal Red Cross shall miss him.

  58. Max, like all of us here at HQ, days later, I´m still speechless and devastated. Most people connect you to International. I connect you to quickly grasping a (humanitarian) problem, analyzing its implications, summarizing it in plain words and moving on to tackle the consequences (still realizing all the restrictions we´re subjected to). Symptoms, anamnesis, diagnosis, therapy. There we go, all the way. We, too, went through this pattern in many inspiring und illuminating discussions and interviews. No surprise your team appreciated you so much. And who cares into which box in the organization chart it all fits?

I feel that I need to stress this because I´m not in International anymore since about 20 years. However, I shipped 20 children to our first tutorial & summer camp at the Attersee region in Upper Austria the other day. Your home province. I was right there when the devastating news broke.

The camp is the preliminary highlight of our nationwide tutoring programs which have – at first glance – nothing to do with International. However, it was you who made their launch possible initially, in 2010/11. Organisation chart boxes never bothered you. You always cared about people in need, here or elsewhere, how to assist them best, establishing necessary links, and never mind the job description. Few people know. I do, I won´t forget, and it all came back vigorously last Sunday.

Thank you for your wit, esprit, energy, warmness, experience, advice, friendship and passion for our cause over the years. And for all the funny stories! Thank you also for your indelible, ageless and still serene (how did you do this?) rage against injustice and inhumanity. Wish we had talked more often.

    Robert

  60. Dear Max – I still can’t believe that you are no more with us. This a great loss to entire RCRC Movement. First time I met you in Vienna in 2007 with your capacity as head of International Dept at Austrian RC to explore partnership with Nepal RC and I found you have a great understanding of development and humanitarian initiatives of RCRC – Later we met almost after 10 years when I join back in Nepal with Australian RC and you were the HoO of IFRC Nepal office. I recall all good days when we discussed, shared, exchanged our point of views on different issues together to overcome number of challenges. You were a very friendly person with greater understanding and respect for the people in needs. I had the privilege to also join you at number of informal occasions including enjoying with beer together. You will be greatly missed.

My heartfelt condolences to entire family – Rest in Peace Max

  61. My deepest condolences to Max’s family for the immense loss. I worked with Max in Nepal and remember his commitment to the work we did despite the ups and downs that humanitarian work inevitably brings along, his pragmatism and his sense of humor. Max came along many times during the weekends to watch football with a little group of football enthusiastics that gathered in Sanepa, Kathmandu. Max, you will be missed by many.

Schlaf wohl Max – Du bleibst unvergessen! Gabi und Dein Freund und Kollege Herbert.

  66. Thank you for your dedication and wish to always make a difference – you did, but left us way too early.

My heartfelt condolences to your family and close friends

    R.I.P. lieber Max

  71. Max, still difficult to understand why you had left us so early and so suddenly. While admitting that this is God’s plan, I cannot deny that it is a great loss for your family, friends and colleagues in humanitarian arena and beyond. Very much privileged to work closely with you in difficult time in Nepal, and indeed to have you to lead us as HOO/IFRC. While in no-way-out circumstances, you were always amazed us with your vitality, leadership, wit and intelligence based on your belief and philosophy. Last time I met you was your personal invitation for my farewell with smile, but this time with tears, I would return you the farewell for your amazing life fully-devoted to the humanity. Rest in Peace, Max. You are surely a wonderful soul.

  73. What a tremendous loss for the Movement!
My deepest condolences go to the family, friends and colleagues.
Remembering his wonderful, generous and gentle soul will forever remain in our hearts.
    May Max rest in peace!

    Barbara Konzet

  78. It is with great sadness that I heard the sad news that Max had left us. He was a kind, patient and intelligent man, who will be sadly missed by all those who knew him and respected his passion and commitment to humanitarianism.

  80. With infinite sorrow but with profound fondness I write these words of sympathy for the family of Max, for all the friends and colleagues in the Austrian Red Cross and around the world. It was a great privilege to know Max, to work with him in his various incarnations, including this very last one – in Tbilisi as a part of Europe IFRC Team. A great colleague, with profound interest in humanitarian issues, always curious to the new ideas, a relentless fighter for the good course, such a solid and reliable personality, and a great team leader with that unforgettable sense of humour. He will be remembered by many around the world, and he is and will be missed. RIP Max

  83. Max was a great person with sensitive capacities for human relations and kindness. He had the habilities to integrate personnal and humanitarian values in his daily job keeping always in mind the interest of the most vulnerable people. All my support to Max family and colleagues. Be in peace dear Max.

Lieber Max, ruhe in Frieden. Ich werde Dich nie vergessen.
Mein herzliches Beileid an Deine Familie.
    Hans Peham

  88. I am very shocked and saddened to hear about the death of Max who was working with us in Nepal Earthquake mission together. I still cannot believe that he died so unexpectedly.

Max was such a wonderful person and had always been a great asset to our Red Cross Movement. his presence will always be missed at Redcross Movement.

    With heartfelt condolences,

RIP, Max.
    Arad Benkö

  93. Max always took people seriously and never belittled anyone. He was never patronizing: neither at work nor in private. That made him a truly great man, who we will miss very much.

    Michael

  99. It is difficult to understand that Max passed away so suddenly. I knew Max as a friendly, open minded and trustworthy colleague with whom was always easy to discuss both professional and personal issues. He was always ready to share his vast experience and knowledge with others. My deepest sympathy with his family and friends, Red Cross lost a good humanitarian human.

  100. Oh Max. I have so fond memories of our meetings at various Wiener Cafés to explore ways to convince your government to enter into a tripartite cooperation. We were day-dreaming, thinking what we could do together to increase Austrian response and support. And then we would quickly switch to Asia, Bhutan, biking, life. And then you moved to my beloved Caucasus, and I was hoping to take a short break and meet you there, to share some good food and wine in Tbilisi.
Thanks for having given me the opportunity to meet you in my life. My deepest sympathy to your family, friends and colleagues.

  101. Very sad to hear this news. Max was very welcoming to me when I spent 3 months with IFRC in Nepal in 2016. He was extremely wise, encouraging and determined. Clearly an effective and inspiring humanitarian.

    Markus Liebl

  103. Much too soon we have to say Goodbye to Max. On behalf of Light for the World, I would like to express our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. We also want to emphasise how much we appreciate Max’ work, his vision of a better, more humane world and his tireless efforts to work towards this vision. He knew all about humanitarian affairs and development work from his daily practice, and drew on this knowledge when fighting for policy changes. So many times we lobbied and fought side by side, calling on our politicians to change course and increase the fight against poverty and injustice. Max was always outspoken but kind, focused yet foresighted, celebrating life and fighting for others.
Tomorrow when we continue our work we will keep Max in our minds and hearts, as he will remain a role model for all of us.

Rupert Roniger, Light for the World

  107. Learning about Max’s death has reached all those who knew him with disbelief. Max has been known as a kind, understanding, committed and professional colleague. He also had a great sense of humour. He lived the Red Cross values and mandate and was respected by all those who knew him. I wish to express my condolences to his wife and daughters, to his extended family and to his friends. Dear Astrid, Julia and Lisa, I wish you courage, patience and strength and know that the pain you feel will take a long time to lessen and the void he leaves behind will never be filled. Max will always be fondly remembered. With my deepest sympathies, Helena

  110. Max joined the Humanitarian Country Team in Nepal after the 2015 Earthquakes to lead the IFRC’s efforts. He did so with an admirable calm in what were very trying and challenging times. He will be remembered as a compassionate, kind and helpful colleague who worked hard to make sure that the people of Nepal were assisted in the best possible way.

He will be remembered for his contributions to the Humanitarian Country Team, his collaborative approach and most importantly his deep respect for Nepal, which pervaded through all his efforts.

Our heartfelt condolences go to his family and colleagues.

    Stine Heiselberg on behalf of
The Humanitarian Country Team in Nepal

  111. Lieber Max,

  113. This news has been a shock and a sadness. As so many others have said Max had immense personal resilience and an ability to smile regardless of the situation. He was a wise colleague. I remember several quiet dinners in Kathmandu where we laughed a lot and where he provided advice on how to live a better, more considered, life. He talked so often about his admiration for his wife and his belief and hopes for his daughters. My deepest sympathy to them now.

  114. Lieber Max,
